Isnt hindsight a wonderful thing?
Perhaps we should have listened to the people who told us not to go to San Pedro Sula??
Or perhaps we should have got up early and arrived earlier and probably even go all the way to Tegucigalpa....but the fact is we didnt
We arrrived In San Pedro at dusk....the road in was horrendous....the worst poverty i have probably seen...barely houses...more like boxes....i thought oh my god.
Was dark by the time we got off the bus. We had a couple of hotels we thought we would check out....looking at the place though we didn{t hold out much hope...our guidebook not recommending anywhere to stay in the whole city...not a good sign. And it was right...the place was a dump...one of the hotels looked like a prison...well most of them did and im not kinding....long corridors, no windows...barred doors and extremely dark. Was no way i was going there. Our only other option was to go to the hostel we had seen advertised, which was expensive...but probably safe and not like a dungeon. Only problem was we only had a crappy map of its location. We walked for miles....feeling very uneasy...place was fairly quiet...too quiet. We walked and walked....couldnt see anywhere that looked like it would have a hostel and were now miles from anywhere...but we have learnt that hostels are often where you least expect them to be. Found the street we thought it was on...nothing...everywhere dark....dogs barking everywhere..to say i was scared was an understatement. Im sure even Neil was at this point. In a strange city, in the darlk, with no idea where to go!
Fortunately for us some olfd bloke walked past and seeing our huge rucksacks...obviously worked out we were looking for a hostel...and pointed in the right direction.Had no idea where he was pointing us to...as he never said a word...but had little other options at this point. Turned out he did know what we wanted. Some girl let us in, didnt speak any english and couldnt get hold of the owners....so somehow we managed to get her to show us a bed....we dumped our stuff and headed out again...very reluctantly may i add!
We were hungry having not eaten for a while....had no idea where to go. The hostel stated it was close to restaurants and other places...but was in fact near nowhere at all...Ended up walking all the way back to the centre....much to my dismay. Passed the bus station...but was shuting...so got no help there.
ack in the centre....it didnt seem so bad....there were lights and people. The square was actually quite nice...too perfect says Neil....but i thought it was nice...certainluy after the dingy streets we had been in for the last few hours it was!
We wandered a little, looking for somewhere to eat. There were the usual markets everywhere....more western but still crazy.
Found a reasonable looking chinese place...it looked like it was that or burger king! turned out to be okay. Had two huge plates of food...couldnt eat it all....had a laugh at a couple of local drunks...then decided to head back....too scary to hang around.
Was a long long way back....was so glad to be back safe and sound in our hostel....maybe San Pedro is okay by daylight...by night....its just a tad scary!
Were enjoying a nice early night....when we woken at 1am by someone trying to check in...for some reason they couldnt seem to open our door, where they seemed insistent on putting this annoying person. I woke to hear the door rattling, convinced someone was trying to get in....and rob me or worse. Eventually they managed to get the door open...and that annoying person....eventually went to bed....wasnt impressed...specially as we have to be up at 6:30am!
Oh what an enjoyable experience San Pedro turned out to be!!!
