Once off the boat (boo hoo), we had the job of finding accommodation for the night. Had absolutely no idea where to go! Some guy who used to work for Ragamuffin, offered to take us somewhere, we were unsure....until the aussie guys decided to go with him, so we followed. Had to walk miles, virtually the whole length of Palencia to get there and then turned out to be some guys house, in the middle of a building site! Still it was a room and it was cheap. He had 2 double rooms, we got the ensuite one, the aussie the other, although they werent sure about sharing a double bed, so one of them opted for the couch. I was dying for a nice cold beer at this point, had been a long walk...and i hadnīt had a beer for a while...only rum punch!!!!
So we headed out to find beer. Palencia is a strange place. It has no roads, well they say it has the narrowest street in the world....but it is hardly a street! The whole place is basically sand, with a thin strip of concrete running through the place! They call it the sidewalk. Its definately not a street in the conventional sense!! But kinda cool. Found a bar on the beach, very western looking, but our chances of finding many others bars didnīt look that hopeful. Had a beer, well 2 actually! Then headed off exploring. Went all the way along the sidewalk...to the dock, where we sad to see our boat had gone! A couple of locals asked what we were looking for, and recommended a couple of places. Went to find them, but they all looked wierd...one with some īgod is goodī message outside!!! So kept looking. Went to buy some cigarrettes in the local chinese grocery store. (all the stores seem to be owned by chinese in Belize!). Then checked out a few more places to eat, everywhere was shut or dead! So ended up back at Barefoot, where we had had food earlier, and shared some nachos. We were dead tired, we couldmīt even handle another beer. All that fresh air and sun....has completely exhausted us. were ready to go to bed, when the aussies turned up. Chatted to them, and then were about to leave again, when 4 of the others from our trip turned up! So ended up having another coke and chatting. When we couldnīt stay awake any longer, said our goodbyes and hit the sack!
Palanecia was cool, but not a place you would want to hang around in too long!
