The silver city
Entry 64 of 119 | show all | print this entry |
Today was our first real adventure in central america. We had to figure out how to get a bus and find somewhere to stay for the night. It was to be the first time we turned up in a city without booking. Getting the bus wasa easy, we took the rediculously cheap subway to the bus station, did a whole lot of ug ug uging and proceded to our bus. When for the first time ever i was searched prior to boarding and given titbits for the ride. The bus was real luxery, worlds away from greyhound with big wide seats, a film and tickets that actually guarenteered you a seat. After about three hours we arrived in Taxco. The bus station was pretty grotty and the main street a chaotic mix of vw camper buses, vw beetle taxis and people trying to sell there various wares at the market. The town is very small, nestled on the hillside. A UNESCO site where all modern building has been outlawed giving it a real cute colonial feel. We set off in the direction we believed was towards the zocalo, made easier by the huge imposing church. However as we wandered our way through the maze of markets with our backpacks we just couldnt find the way up. We were metres away but until a kind man directed us completely lost. When we reached the main square we couldnt find the street to the hotel we had in mind but a tourist guide directed us to our prefered choice. Only to hang round like a bad smell till we gave him a satisfactory tip for his help. The room was basic but clean and in a pretty little colonial building with balconies and a nice courtyard. We rested before getting our barings in preparation for the following days explorations. After yet more rest....its a hard life!!!!! we set out to find somewhere to eat. We got caught in a horendous flash storm before bumping into two girls we'd met in mexico city. After a brief catch up we went our seperate ways only to remeet and decided to go to this wee little restaurant they'd seen. Was a fun evening, i had my first spag bol plate of central america and amy had a buritto. The company was good and we allowed ourselves more beers than usual. We said our goodbyes and went to sleep. The next day we had a leasurely get up and had a very nice breakfast of freshly squeesed orange juice {which are green here} and brewed coffee and freshly baked bread. We had a brief look around the church and the zocalo before amy had a brainwave to explore up the hill. So began a long, tiring but pleasent walk along a windy road dodging the taxis and buses. We had walked about walking to the christ which loomed over the city and after a while that became our intention. It was extremely hot and by the time we reached a plateau where the locals were playing footie we were very much in need of the refreshments on offer. Then we walked the final bit to the top where the wee christ became a 30ft monster. The views were breathtaking and a very satisfactory reward for the climb. The afternoon was our first attempts at bartering which we failed miserable to do. Firstly getting some chicken bits for lunch, delicious but amy was some what put off when i discovered they were chicken necks. Secondly a disasterous attempt to haggle for a couple of hammocks but hey at only 4 pounds each whose to complain. And another complete failure at the silver market where we left almost empty handed. The evning was spent in the hotel restaurant where i had enchiladas and amy had tacos. We were sat on the balcony overlooking the plaza and watched the beetles buzz round the square until the band inturrupted the peace of the evening but i was never one to complain at having to listen to classic british rock. A very pleasent end to our time in a beautiful city
