It was sunday and we were going to New Orleans. We were somewhat sceptical after last years hurricane but everyone had reassured us it was all ok so we hit the road. It was quite a long drive and after a while we hit the swamps and the road became an endless winding bridge past shrimping boats and small shack like houses. We eventually got to the city and at first all seemed ok but after driving around for a bit and getting very lost we had our first glimpses of the devastation. Then i ran out of fuel just as we hit a bad bit. Everything was wrecked, there were a few signs of rebuilding but not much. After wot seemed ages and sfter me and ames started to panic we found a gas station that had just had new pumps put in. With the fuel problem sorted we set about getting ourselves unlost but that wasnt that easy as most of the road signs were twisted or completely absent. Plus the fact that there are so many immense bridges to avoid. We decided to sort out our bed for the night so set about finding a campsite. We drove through the french quarter on our way outta town, saw it looked really cool and well worth gettin back to. Nothing could prepare us for wot happened next. We drove through the st bernard district and if someone had told u the hurricane happened yesterday u would have believed them. It was horrible to see. Gas stations on there sides, verandas in the road, whole houses sideways! We couldnt understand why nothing had been done! We knew there was no hope of the campsite we were heading for being open but we had to keep on driving. It got steadily worse as we passed fields of caravans where the people of new orleans obviously lived now. Well after finding the campsite and seeing it was closed we decided to forget looking and head back into the french quarter. We parked up and set off for a wander. It was very pretty and very french. Loads of balconies with plants flowing over them, hourses and carts in the streets and loads of galleries and cafes. We decided to check out one of the cafes that looked really cool. Had a pretty little patio where we enjoyed a beer before wandering down to the waterfront to watch the world go by on the banks of the mississippi. We couldnt stay long as we had nowhere to stay so head outta town. Reckoned we had to head inland to ensure we got away from the devastation. We eventually found a campsite in a state park but it was very late so i decided that we had to head out for some food and something decent at that as it had been a shocking day. So we head to Applebys and i had yummy steak and veggies and ames had chicken, then it was home to bed........
