Old France and its god damned tourists!

Today was the start of another road trip, now me being stupid had booked the car hire from the wrong location, so when i called for my pick up they called there local agent and got us taken to there. Only problem, no unlimited milage and insurance was more. Not a lot we could do with it so we set off once again in a Hyundai Elantra, reckon we should get one. As if, affording one would be hard enough, let alone keeping one looking plush.
This time round we knew are way out of town so we were straight on the road. We knew it was about three hours to Quebec City on the highway so we decided as we werent short on time to take a minor road in the right direction. Highways are so so dull!!!! After a wee while we passed the amazing structure of the Montreal Olympic Stadium, dated but still looked pretty fancy today so must have been way out in its time.
Onward we went, the road was very rural with loads of little houses. We stopped for lunch at a roadside picnic area. Nowhere near as nice as the BC ones but had picnic benches so amy was happy....... On to Quebec City....... finally got there to be confronted with two problems....... One, my gas light was flashing at me and god knows where the gas stations are round here and Two, where the hell do you park. So we headed for the Vistors Centre...cause they can help with anything! (not sure they sell gas, or parking spaces but stilL!) They were able to help tho....by giving us a map...and directions. Filled the car, well no someone did it for us, they still have service petrol stations!!!! then headed for the recommended car park, except it colsed in like an hour! So useful...drove around, all the carparks were scary underground things...so Neil decided to drive into the old walled city....and lo and behold there was a nice simple car ark with a nice simple flat fee! Was at the top of a hill though!
Time to wander...first impressions were wow a cool old city....with cute streets and cafes and shops. However on closer inspection it was just another tourist resort! The place had been ruined by bloody tourists! The most impressive building in the whole of old town was an enourmous Fairmont hotel, which dominates the skyline and every postcard...and every shop was selling the same old tourist tat!!! The streets were all full of tour groups, getting in the way, blocking anything worth seeing...damn i hate tourists! Saw what there was to see....didn't take long! Then needed refreshment...the only option was a cool french cafe...you really would have believed you were in france...there was no Canada in sight! We ordered coffee and soda...and enjoyed it sat on the pavement watching the world go by. It was a rip off anyway...but then the bitch of a waitrress had the bloody cheek to complain that we hadn't given her the full 15% tip! And we were only talking a few cents! We had rounded it up as people do...but no she wasn't happy! OOh she made me mad, if it had been me i wouldn't have given her any tip...but Neil is too nice!
After that had a quick look at the harbour...and some more cool buildings...then headed into the real town to try and find some camping gas, so we could eat that night. Walked for ages as we had no idea where we going...found an army surpless shop...had none...but were given directions...that after walking for miles...were useless....so no food for us that night! We really should have got some before we set off on our road trip!!! Oh well...you live you learn! I moaned all the way back to the car...i was tired and it was all up-hill! Drove out of Quebec...along the wierdest road...everything was so backward...and well French...needed food as we couldn't cook...only thing we could find that didn't look horrific was Macdonalds....but even that was a nightmare...they didn't speak a word of english...and everything was in French...even the menu!!!!! Did manage to eat...who knows what but it was edible. The realised we were actually going the wrong way! Wanted to be on the other side of the river...so we drove all the way back to Quebec, out the other side and across the bridge! Finally on the right side...it was dark and we had no where to sleep....so searched frantically for a campsite...found one called Motel camping!!? Was still open...and it had room...they did try to flog us a room in the motel tho!
Put our tent up on a little island...and went to bed...think the site was cool...but it was too dark to know!!!!! Truly was an adventurous day! More thumbnails ...
