I am not doing well at keeping up with this Blog thing. I have dated this Nov.11 but am actually writing it on the 20th from N.Z. (an embarrassing confession....).
Carrying on from Brisbane... Neil and I were sad to say good-bye to the great people and good times we had and took off to Cairns in northern Queensland where we met up with Grant, rented a car and drove another hour north to Port Douglas. There we spent 5 days at a lovely apartment and did two days scuba diving out on the Great Barrier Reef. Clare was able to join us for 3 days and the second dive.
Highlight of the diving was sharing time and close proximity with a, fairly large, reef shark that had quite an evil look in his eye
This was our Neil-is-60 celebration weekend so we had a special dinner out and enjoyed emails, cards and a couple of videos sent especially for the Old Guy's b-day.
Also had a drive to Mossman Gorge for a swim and another road trip to Mareeba to have lunch with the parents of another of Clare's friends. We had to drive over the coastal mountain range to the much drier interior region to get there. A lovely drive and amazing farmland to contrast with the tropical, lush coast. It was wonderful to meet Irene and Jim. They put on a fabulous steak lunch and Irene took us to another great swimming spot at Emerald Creek Falls for a quick dip.
We were back to our flat in Port Douglas just in time to catch the end of the Oz-N.Z. rugby game.
Next day we dropped the car back in Cairns and neil and I flew to Melbourne with Grant and Clare headed back to Brisbane to contemplate the fun of her fast approaching exams.
Bottom line: What a treat for the four of us to be able to dive the GBR together, one of my long term dreams. AND... to combine that with celebrating Neil's b-day! Whooooo-eeeee!
We so enjoyed seeing this northern area of Queensland and recommend it to everyone, with the warning that visiting any later in the season might be too hot and humid to enjoy.
