Picked up our rental car this morning. Pete very kindly had ordered an SUV - very cool to drive but unfortunately Nina couldn't see over the steering wheel so had to sit on our two travel pillows to give her a boost. First time for both of us driving an automatic - we have been missing out, why do we drive manuals when automatics are so easy.

We had planned to drive down the scenic Highway 1 which goes along the coast but unfortunately our stupid satnav lady took us on Highway 101 which although is probably a quicker route, it's basically like the M1 but with a lot more fast food restaurants along it.

It took us a couple of hours to get to Carmel and we headed to Point Lobos - a state reserve with lots of hiking trails along the coast and great views. It's been overcast all day but the views were still impressive. Saw our first wildlife - we think they were deer, a blue bird thingy, and more sea lions. Spent a couple of hours hiking various trails until Pete realised we had missed a meal and we then headed to our accommodation in Carmel. We had booked a room on Airbnb as hostels are really expensive in the area, and were not disappointed - the house we are staying in is gorgeous.

Ventured into the town centre for dinner tonight to a restaurant recommended by our host. What a lovely town - really picturesque with lots of cafes, restaurants and boutiques all set within a forest. We are really surprised by how cold it is at night, we wore fleeces to dinner and considering we are in California, the weather so far has been much chillier than back home.

Sounds like you guys are having a great time. Neens had to laugh about the two pillows so you could see over the steering wheel! Everyone in Oz drives autos too - feels like dodgem cars!! Hope you continue to have a great adventure xx
