Switzerland 2009
Day 5
World Cup Downhill

I awoke to another beautiful day in Switzerland.  Sunny skies and around 35 degrees, a perfect day to be up in the Alps.   Had breakfast and went to the station to get a ticket to Wengen and return to Interlaken.  The cost of the ticket was 26 francs or about $23.  Upon arrival in Lauterbrunnen I was met with a mob scene as the only way up to Wengen is by train from either Lauterbrunnen or on the other side of the mountain, Grindelwald.  The cog train up to Wengen is small only 2-4 cars and the cars are small.  People would pack the cars like sardines and gut it out for the 20 minute trip up the mountain.  I had to wait for around 40 minutes packed with many other people like cattle.  Finally it was our turn and I stood in the aisle for a 30 minute ride.  I had decided not to go to the race as it  is a very long walk to the finish line area and all you see is the racer finishing, or going up to Wengenalp, which costs another $40 round trip, plus a $30 ticket to the race.  I decided to hang out in Wengen and watch on the big screen and listen to the announcer that is heard throughout town.  After a beer on the Eiger Terrace, I headed back down to Lauterbrunnen to beat the crowds leaving and to get back to the hotel to take a break.

As I arrived in my room, Sandy called and we chatted, knowing that the weather in Switzerland was much better than back home. I took a break until dinner, headed out to the Golden Anchor, a place next to the hotel that I have read about but have not eaten at.  The place was OK, although expensive for french onion soup, pork steak, salad and fries, but it was pretty good.  Back to the room for my final night in the hotel.

Tomorrow pack and on the train for a 5 hour trip back to Frankfurt for an early Monday morning departure.

Many Swiss mornings in the valleys start off very dreary.  The clouds and fog seem to hang very low, but around 11:00 once the sun rises over the tops of the mountains, the fog burns off and the day is beautiful.  So if in Switzerland and the day starts out poorly, don't be bummed, a better day awaits.
