. we drove through the town then kept going on a 1 hour detour that would take us into county carlow (to make sure we got all 32 counties and not just 31!) we'd been warned that there was nothing in carlow and after a failed attempt at finding a castle we returned to a little country town near the border for some chips that took at least half an hour to cook and a home made pie before driving up towards birr in county offlay to the farmhouse b&b we were staying in. we got there early enough to admire the donkey, walk around the fields and have a nap before going in to town to find dinner. we ended up at a chinese restaurant because none of the pubs (full of locals who all turned around when we opened the door!) were serving food. then we went back to our very girly looking room to eat apple pie while watching a plastic surgery show, delightful!
we left shortly before sunrise to make up some of the time we'd lost the day before. the first town we went through was abbeyfeale - the home town to tajikistan. we drove towards limerick town then down through tipperary town to cahir where we went to the castle then had breakfast. next stop was just up the road in cashel where we went to an old castle/church settlement, the rock of cashel. it was really good, there was a bit of construction going on but the ruins were amazing, especially the huge arch inside the cathedral. we left cashel and drove on some country roads towards kilkenny town. we got stuck behind a lorry driving slowly along a narrow road but eventually he turned off, which is when we saw the reason he was going so slow... a tractor dragging a trailor slowly down the road. when it was safe he pulled over so we could pass, which was when we saw the real reason he was going so slow... a young boy on cart pulled by a donkey! we managed to pass him without any problems and headed on towards kilkenny
