We left the b&b pretty late after a very nice breakfast and drove back the way we came to see avoca and one other town before hitting the highway. we stopped at avoca when we saw the river... the melting snow from "the big freeze" had completely flooded the river, it was amazing. the whole town was out to have a look and unfortunately some of the buildings along the riverfront were already underwater. we decided to quickly cross the bridge before they closed it! just after we drove through the next town cars coming the other way started to flash their lights and we found out that the road to the highway was closed. so we turned around to go the other way and (after a quick stop at a beautiful church ruin) we found out that way was flooded as well so we ended up going back through avoca with every other person trying to get out of the area. we managed to get onto the high after some detours but then spent ages getting through the next town, enniscorthy, because half the roads were closed due to the floods. eventually we got out of the flood area and drove to wexford, grabbed some lunch and drove to nearby johnston castle and ate while walking around the gardens. then we stopped in waterford for coffee and a walk around town. unfortunately the crystal factory was closed so we got back on the highway and headed for cork, with a few photo stops along the way! we found our hostel (right near the butter and cheese factory), went out for dinner, got surrounded by the very excited ucd girls hockey team who found out that we were from ucd and then made some cd's so we didn't have to listen to anymore lame irish radio!
