with the rainy season comes the end of the diving season here in khao lak. people always think its because of the rain but really, what the hell does it matter if it is raining? you are underwater. the reason for the end of the season is because of the large waves. trying to get back on the boat when it is bouncing 5 meters at a time is just too dangerous. the last trip of the season was an abrupt reminder of this
I find it funny reading through my first year of blog entries and how new and out of place i was. wondering if i will like asia and fit in and how i will adjust to the culture. then you flash forward to most recent posts and i'm married to a thai girl and setting up house. its funny how things happen while you are not even looking. life kinda sneaks up on you and gives you a swift kick in the ass when you are least expecting it. its a great kick in the ass but its still a bit startling :P .
As we all know, married life is not much different then dating life. I have been living with IM for 3 years or so and there is not much to surprise me. i know she's a little bit insane which can be partly attributed to cultural differences and partly to age differences. married life.........who wudda thunk it.
Bought my ticket to alaska the other day. i dont understand airlines at all and i know i'm not the first one to tread across this ground but could someone please explain to me how a one way ticket is $950 and a roundtrip is $1200? what sense does this make? how do the airlines come up with these fares anyway. i have a very clear mental picture of the unifrormed airline receptionists sitting in their break room with a very complicated roullete wheel and as they sit there and drink beer and smoke cigarettes, come up with their airline fares. the sad thing is that i'm probably not that far off the mark.
a friend of mine from college (uni for the english) has suddenly come out of nowhere and is apparently on his way to alaska. he was one of my roomates while i was at SIU and we have kept in touch through email here and there. anyway i got an email from him yesterday saying hi and asking if i would be in chicago soon because he may be moving there. i mentioned that no, i would be going to alaska in a few days instead and the response was sorta like "well that sounds like a good idea" and he is in the process of buying a ticket. kinda a spur of the moment dude. if he does come out it will be fucking stupendous. havent seen him in years and he is definitly an interesting guy.
i'm really hoping that this is my last year in alaska. i know i say this every year but i'm hoping to implemant a plan this year to make it come to fruition. last years alaska trip was all about money for weddings, engagement rings etc etc. this year i am hoping to buy 10 motorbikes to rent out over the season. this should add an extra $1000 a month to my income and thus hopefully cutting me free from alaska. we shall see.
in years past i have had at least a little glimmer of looking forward to going to AK to see some old faces and the scenery and get some proper american food but this year there is only a grim determination to get it over with as quickly as possible. 90 days in alaska and i am gone and back in asia. the one huge upside this year is that I am not going into alaska owing huge amounts of money like last year. in the beginning of last season i owed about $2000 which not only sucks but really brings down your moral. your first large chunk of working goes to debts. this year i dont owe squat which is nice.
turned 37 the other day. you believe that shit? 37........my steady aging is still astounding to me since i stopped maturing mentally at about 17. 37........i'm old. how? how? there was a comedian on the other night and he said "i'm 37 years old. the only way i'll be considered young now is if i die" truer words have never been uttered. oh how i yearn for my younger and stupider days lol.
