i have been living in khao lak (my base of operations for 2 years now) for 3 months. IM and i moved down here the day after sari went back to the U.S. and we have been living a relatively quiet and boring life due to it being the rainy season and that i had no money left after my cross asia trip. We are renting a cute little 2 bedroom house which is really about the size of a middling apartment back in america but for thailand this is pretty nice. i have been living in guesthouses and rented rooms for the last 6 years so to have an actual place to quasi call home is very nice.
Im has been working in a small little restaurant for a few months now and that is pretty cool just because its nice to get her out of the house and making friends and being a little productive. any money she makes is just a happy side note since thai's get paid next to nothing when it comes to none executive jobs. i think she is making like $250 a month so go figure right? of course she decided that she gets a bit lonely when i'm out on the boat so she invested in a shitsu puppy. yes i am a proud pappa to a little fur ball lol. so lets recap...............i have a house (rental), i have a long term girlfriend and now i have a puppy. strange to be settling down a bit but its not a bad thing. i have to admit that mimi (IM named her) is a cute little fucker and certainly adds an entertaining factor to our days. the fact that IM gives her a bath every two days....including conditioner and blow drying....is just hilarious. i will try and upload some pictures soon but since my laptop died it is very difficult for me to get around to uploading things. please forgive my slackness.
work has finally started up and i have been diving quite a bit which is a great thing since i missed being in the water during the off season. i have truly become addicted to the diving industry which is nice since it is also what pays my bills. it was nice to go back to the dive sites that i left 5 months ago, it was like seeing a friend after a long time apart. i am not on the 4 day liveaboards this year (not right now at least). i am working on the day boat as a trip leader which is a promotion since i am one of the 2 people that run that boat and all of the problems that come along with that. its nice to get a promotion of sorts and the money is better but i do miss the relaxed atmosphere and pace of the 4 day boat. either way, i'm in the water and thats pretty much all that matters.
we had the vegetarian festival out here last month. i'm not sure exactly where this comes from but it is certainly not buddhist. i read somewhere it originates in china but i cant be sure. anyways.....for whatever reason this festival entails people putting themselves in trances and putting knives and swords through their mouths....cutting themselves with swords and whipping themselves....all as they walk down the street from store to store to give them blessings. the fact that none of this made me even look twice is just testiment that people can used to anything. this is my neighborhood, where people pierce themselves with midevel weaponary. its a very strange world in which we live and thats what makes it so great.
