Vietnam was an experience for sure but I have to admit that I was glad to get the hell out of town when we finally got on board the jet in Hanoi.  Air Asia has been a great pleasure to deal with during this trip with the flights always being on time and departing in a timely manner.  Not to mention that our bags have arrived at the prescribed destination without any trouble at all.  In further praise of Air Asia, my dumb ass somehow forgot my ipod on the flight from bangkok to kuala lumpur.  i was very dejected and not happy at all but 5 days later as we waited for another flight in kuala lumpur I went over to the air Asia lost and found and there was my beautiful little ipod just waiting for me.  it was a tearful reunion.

But i have gotten ahead of myself here because I have skipped over our trip over to tropical paradise.  We ended up staying on a very very small island in the celebs sea called Mabul.  you could probably walk around the circumference of the island in about 15 minutes if the mood struck but that would mean getting out of the hammock so the mood rarely struck.

There were two populations on this island.  The first being the divers and snorkelers and the hotels and that were set up for their convenience.  This population was very international with every dinner table being like a sort of mini UN.  The other population was the sea gypsies who have set up a community on the shores of the islands with their little huts made out of whatever wood they could find.  The people were very friendly and always smiling as they walked past you carrying their heavy loads on their heads.  I think that there are more children per capita in this community then anywhere else on earth.  I mean there were kids everywhere and mostly naked as they played in the water that surrounded their homes.

The diving was great though the visibility was a bit murky.  Sari did a dive but through a lack of communication and training she ended up doing more snorkeling which turned out OK because she saw quite a lot of shit.  there was really nothing to do on the island then swim with the fish or lay in a hammock or walk around the fishing village.  there was no TV and no air con but the temperature was relatively cool so it wasn't uncomfortable by any means.  The sky was blue, the water bluer and there was a large amount of weird fish in the water so what could be better right?

during this trip I came across an epic episode of bad luck which you can only shake your head at in wonder.  during the second dive of the trip, my regulator hose blew out at 20meters underwater.  I had about 20 seconds to find an alternate source of air before my tank emptied...yikes.  I get back to the room and turn on my computer to see if we have wireless and lo and behold my computer screen had somehow gotten cracked in transit and no longer works which is a HUGE bummer.  it was about 10 minutes after this that i discovered that my ipod was not in my possession.   well suck it up and move on right?  the next day i go diving and on the first dive my camera housing floods which killed my little cannon camera which was a massive bummer and then when i come to the surface, i take my mask off and it actually breaks in the process.  i have never before seen such a string of bad luck.  This actually put sari off diving a bit i think lol.  well despite all of this the trip out to the islands was nice and pretty enjoyable.  there was one night where the fishing village had a wedding and the music was BLARING all night (4am) and that was annoying as hell but it wasn't the end of the world.

all in all it was a pretty cool stop on the trip and was much needed after the hectic life of Vietnam.  I talked to the guys who run the place and i may have a job lined up for next year which would be pretty awesome because the diving is amazing there.  if any of you are looking for a cool place to go diving check into sipidan and/or mabul.  its worth your time
