you know its sort of a sad thing when your body begins to break down from wear and tear.  you should hear the pops and creaks that emit from my joints when my alarm goes off at 7 in the morning.  speaking of which, i thought i had made some sort of pact with the devil that i would never have to wake up at such an ungodly hour ever again after i took a summer school chemistry class in college that started at 7:30.  what the hell am i doing awake this early?  at least the sun comes up here at like 3:30 in the morning because i don't think i could handle the emotional distress of walking to work in the dark.

speaking of bodily breakdowns, i have lost most of the feeling in my fingertips due to toasting them over open flame everyday.  its sort of weird when i try to handle something like pages of a book or count money in my wallet because i cant feel the paper.  most of the feeling will come back over the winter but i have definitely lost some of it permanently.  welcome to the joys of cooking.  i really despise people who inform me that they love to cook after i tell them thats what i do for a job.  these people have no idea the different worlds in which we inhabit in the culinary universe so next time someone tells you they cook at a restaurant the appropriate response is a sad shake of the head and "I'm so sorry".

the sun has finally broken through the clouds over here in homer.  it had been raining and shitty for an epic 3 week period and i think most of us were on the verge of suicide.  i awoke the other morning and opened my door to go to work and was honestly shocked and a little confused by the sunlight that greeted me. according to a newspaper article the other day, this has been the coldest, rainiest and shittiest summer in recorded history for the lower 3rd of Alaska.  thank god I'm not living in a tent this year but its still sucky to have to deal with the bad weather no matter where you are staying.  like i said though, the sun has been out for about 4 days and its great to feel the warmth though its not doing squat for my pasty complexion.....i yearn for working on the boats over in Thailand where its hot and you jump into the sparkling blue water to cool off....where i spend 3-4 hours a day underwater while being paid to do so (that still amazes me).

I'm not going to state the exact number of days left in this summer journey of mine but needless to say its beginning to get short and the end is nigh.  my boss.....the executive chef Maggie burns who was made famous by an article in the magazine Alaska home (hi Maggie don't kill me.....she hates that fucking article) had saved my blog posting saying how much i missed Alaska and just wanted to be in the cold and stop sweating....she was waiting for me to go on one of my patented mid summer rants about hating tourists and working and my god damn coworkers etc etc but i have kept my cool just to spite her and not let her rub that friggin posting in my face.  what the hell was i thinking....missing Alaska....i must have been on crack....just kidding, i do like this place, i just wish i had time to lounge and be lazy sometimes.  its a dream i have....I HAVE A DREAM, I HAVE BEEN TO THE MOUNTAIN TOP, I HAVE SEEN THE PROMISED LAND, AND ITS GOLDEN BEACHES AND LITTLE BROWN GIRLS IN SMALL CLOTHING......CAN I GET AN AMEN?
