So here i am at the official end of this years journey into south east Asia.  I'll be boarding a plane in about 36 hours so i don't have long to be officially out and about in Asia.  you know its funny because for the last month or so Ive really been feeling that i need a break from Thailand and the ongoing girlfriend situation and that Alaska would provide that break.  it wasn't until my bus pulled into bangkok for the last time this year that i suddenly just DID NOT WANT TO GO TO WORK.  it all hit me like a ton of bricks and now my mind is just filled with images of peeling endless pounds of shrimp...pulling tiny bones out of piles of salmon with needle nose pliers and other such niceties that i have to look forward to.  it doesn't really matter how much i don't want to go because I'm pretty much broke at the moment.  i have wasted sooo much money this year it kinda makes me ill.  i sat down and added it all up and if you include the airfare to and from Asia, i have spent about $9000 on things other then living and seeing the sights....that is pretty bad considering i make about $15,000 all told lol.

Ninny is doing good surprisingly and has pretty much resigned herself to the fact that i have to go back for a few months.  its actually her birthday today so a big shout out to the ninster!!  i love the girl but a little space this summer will be nice for sure.  to say that i feel smothered and a bit trapped by it all would be an accurate description but i think everyone goes through that eventually.....don't they?

i just went to the u.s. embassy today to get some more pages put in my passport because i had run out of room (again).  that's one of the good things about being American....we just keep adding pages upon pages to the passport (we got new designs by the way and they are MUCH better then the old one) where as people from other countries have to get whole new passports when their pages run out.  its funny that when you go to the u.s. embassy you don't actually see one American working there.  oh I'm sure there are quite a few deep in the bowels where the actual diplomatic work gets done and I'm sure there is a healthy delegation from the CIA headquartered in a few offices but as far as security and counter people and just the faces that you see and deal with...not ONE of them is American.  very strange.

so where Ive been diving is the island ko tao (my faithful readers know this already) and when asked, we do admit that we have a resident pack of bull sharks that hang out at a certain dive site but don't bother anybody (they have a reputation as being kinda dangerous).  but holy shit, a fisherman caught a 2 meter tiger shark in one of his nets about 300 meters off the shore!  Tiger sharks are f'ing dangerous....only behind the great white in the "oh shit" factor.  they had never been seen near ko tao before but lo and behold, there this fucker was.  oh joy of joys lol

i think Ive found a doable way of hitting up Africa and seeing some sights for a month or so.  i have to do a little more investigating but it definitely looks doable and a couple of my compatriots from the dive shop are interested in going along to go diving with the great whites over in south Africa.  would be a nice vacation from our vacations so to speak.  we'll see how it pans out but I'm crossing my fingers.

OK well i guess I'm off like a prom dress up into the frozen north woods, this is today's weather forecast for homer from the internet     " Tonight Mostly cloudy. A chance of rain and snow after midnight. Rain likely south of Clam Gulch. Lows in the 30s. East wind 10 to 15 mph except east 20 to 35 mph around Kachemak Bay."  HOLY CRAP!!  We all have commitments and bullshit and the likes of that and here is my yearly dose.  I'm not going to complain too much but damnit i will at least do a little bit gnashing of teeth.  i hope you all enjoy your summer and eat lots of hot dogs and corn on the cob (if you are European i have no idea what you people do for the summer).  when you are out enjoying the day and feeling the sun on your face and the wind in your hair, spare me a thought because I'll be roasting my gonads in a kitchen.

There are no sharks in the Great Lakes...but on shore, a different story. Lots of dive opportunities in Erie and Ontario...but you need a suit. Welcome home...johnp
