having said all that, how the hell are you? i hope everyone has enjoyed there summer of great weather and wonderful bbq's. the baseball season and picnics, taking the kids to the park and going for walks in the cool of the evening. i hope you all have had a good season and taken advantage of it fully.....if you haven't, then get off your ass because you only have a few weeks before the wind blows and the rain flies. the summer here is starting to wind down and its getting a bit chilly at night (not that it was every really all that warm). the stars are out at night finally after months of a seemingly endless afternoon. the time draweth short my friends before we are all wrapped in the embrace of winter. for me, the embrace is of an old love that i have longed for.....for most of you its an embrace you could well do without but it comes for you anyway.
things of interest here in homer are as usual few and far between. i would have to say that the only really interesting thing that has happened is that my tent was attacked (well shaken at least) by a bear while i was in it. i was sleeping around 3am the other night when i awoke for no particular reason. suddenly i could hear what could be described as very wet, hoarse, heavy breathing right next to my head but on the other side of the nylon tent wall. now moose don't make this sort of noise and the only other 2 possibilities were either a very serious and dedicated pervert trying to come in and snuggle with me or a furry little bear trying to do the same. i ruled out the first and when i realized it was a bear, well thats when the tent was shaken back and forth. at this point i yelled at the top of my lungs "oh FUCK" (please ratchet my voice up a few octaves for full effect of my very feminine howl) and jumped to the other side of my tent. at the sound of my voice the bear took off through the underbrush and could be heard barreling through whatever lay in its path. i was badly shaken and quite scared but i had to work in a few hours and i miraculously fell asleep about 5 minutes after the bear left.
so some exciting news....well exciting for me at least. i have finally broken down and purchased what can only be described as a professional level SLR camera. for those of you who view my photos on my on line photo sight then this will definitely be an upgrade in viewing (if anyone is interested in being added to the list for photos please just let me know). i dropped quite a bit of cash on this thing but i take enough photos to justify the purchase. also on the new purchase list is pretty much an entire wardrobe. Ive been wearing the same clothes for the last 3 years. 3 pairs of shorts, one pair of jeans and 5 tshirts. these clothes have for the most part begun to disintegrate. my sandals are beyond belief as far as wear and tear and have literally fallen off my feet. i broke down and spent a couple of hundred dollars on new clothes and shoes, so look out world cuz now I'm styling (not really but i am cute in my own way).
its funny trying to type nowadays since Ive lost almost all feeling in my fingertips from the heat i deal with everyday. I'm training a new cook who has really never worked in a kitchen before and he is amazed that i reach onto the grill and test temperature and adjust things with my hand. he tried it and burned the holy bejesus out of himself. the joys of cooking i suppose....i hope none of you ever have to experience this joy.
so after this post i will probably have one more to write from Alaska. i have 24 days left here and the time is actually speeding up instead of slowing down. i will be sitting in my nice little cramped air china seat before i know it and back in the stifling heat of Thailand not long after that. oh let me wax poetic about the fun that i have had here in the "great north woods.....working as a cook for awhile....never did like it all that much and one day the ax just fell" (some Dylan lyrics for ya). OK I'm outtie and off to bed back up on the hill with my bear and Chauncey the moose to keep me company. oh the cast of characters that fill my life surprise even me at times.....though i have to admit that I'm doing better then when i was in college. after all i did sublet a house to jasmine the 300 pound black transsexual, another friend would piss in the corner of our living room when drunk, and i somehow turned my little stripper friend "Kat" into my little prostitute friend without giving it much fore thought.....looking back it probably wasn't the best idea. someone remind me and ill tell that story later because it really is kind of funny. as a parting thought i will leave you with a great quote from an unknown source.............."strive to be the person your dog thinks you are"
