so this is going to be my post sister visit posting.  wow what a different world it is when you are traveling around with a sibling.  the hotel upgrade in my life is enough to cause me to go into shock.  usually i judge a good room on whether or not it has a powerful fan and a toilet that can flush but the standards were definitely sky high for someone on a proper vacation lol.  to add to the low key weirdness you have to understand that  the two of us hadnt had any sort of meaningful conversation since the mid '80's so you could see a recipe for disaster  but thankfully things worked out pretty good if i do say so myself. I showed her around bangkok, hitting the grand palace and the reclining buddha before heading off to the weekend market.  the weekend market is just a huge hodgepodge of stands and stalls selling everything under the sun.  i went from looking at shoes and silk scarves to checking out some bull dog puppies just to give you an example of the unending variety.  the weird part of the weekend market is that even though its huge and unending, you find yourself kind of making small circles and covering the same ground over and over again.  it got so bad with sari and i that we found a map and made a conscious effort to get out of the little shopping vortex that we had formed for ourselves but still couldnt break free....we just kept passing the same stalls over and over....didnt matter if we made a left or a right or went straight for a few blocks or more....we would inevitably stumble back across the shops we had just left.  it was a bit aggravating, especially after 6 hours of it.
after the joys of bangkok we flew down to phuket and took a ferry to phi phi.  i like the island and its really beautiful but they take price gouging to new levels and to be perfectly honest, the place isnt worth the price these people are asking.  sari went on a snorkeling trip and i stayed behind to sit on the beach and do nothing.  the upside to visiting phi phi was i met a cute thai girl in the shop where sari booked her snorkelling and shes going to come out to ko tao in a few weeks so i cant complain really.  from phi phi we hit up krabi and the beautiful limestone cliffs that surround it.  i think this is probably the most beautiful place in thailand and i love just sitting on the beach and taking in my surroundings.  sari talked me into going sea kyakking and that was actually a lot of fun as we poked around the base of the towering cliffs and tried to wedge our way into little alcoves.  the upside to this was that neither of us drowned so the parents should be happy.
from krabi we took a long and arduous journey to samui....should have taken about 4 hours but instead it took 10 and thats all i really want to say about it.  samui was a very chilled out place and we spent the whole day sitting on the beach...that night sari and a australian girl went shopping for purses and after 3 hours we had made it about 4 blocks from the hotel....they stopped at every single stall displaying at least one purse. it was ridiculous and boring and i bailed out and left them to their fun.
from samui we took another ferry over to my home town of ko tao and this is where things got a bit weird.  sari had gotten a room at a super posh little place with a private beach etc etc.  so when we landed i suggested she go check in and get settled...in that time i could get my little room and do my laundry and catch up with some friends i hadnt seen in a month.  so we agree to meet in a few hours and get some lunch.  now fast forward a few hours and im waiting in my dive shop for sari to show up and just as im about to go looking for her she walks in and is a blubbering, sobbing mess.  the thought "oh jesus what now" came through my mind and when i asked her what was wrong she explained the following story.......she arrived at her hotel and checked in and went to her bungalow to get changed...when she came out she heard someone yelling for help and saw people dragging a woman out of the water.  she runs over and starts providing cpr to this thai woman who according to sari was obviously past any help.  the whole point of cpr is to keep the person with a air supply and blood flow until an ambulance comes and shock can be administered.....the scenes you see with people coming back to life after a few breath and a pounding on a chest never actually happen in real life.  so here is sari, on her nice little tropical vacation, pumping this womans chest for all she's worth knowing that the nearest ambulance and doctor is about 4 hours away by boat....welcome to thailand!
so those of you who are in the family or close to the family let me assure you that me and sari actually got along quite well and had a bit to talk about.  there were a few moments on both sides where we bit our tongues and let slide something that could easily have turned into an argument which in itself is amazing.  so it was 50 degrees in january, the bears are one game from the super bowl and me and sari spent 10 days together without throttling each other...and of course there is that little anti christ up in nonrthern thailand that is turning 4......yeah the end of the world is upon us.
