had to say goodbye to my little thai girlfriend yuy today (pronounced like you are making a u-turn....a "u'ey"). really cute and adorable and made me promise to email her as close to daily as possible. oh yeah, you'll find this funny. she has christened me "chang noy" which is thai for small elephant...yeah yeah but when she says it, it sounds so cute
so its been pretty eventful the last few days. went on this day trip with the girlfriend and another couple to a zoo packed away deep in the forest. i was a little skeptical but it actually turned out to be pretty decent. the animal enclosures were large and mostly bearable and they actually had quite a lot of animals. got to play with a baby elephant (yuy wouldnt stop pointing out that me and the baby elephant were one in the same....."chang noy chang noy!!") and had him nearly take me down for the bag of sweet potatos i was holding in my hand. you dont realize how powerful those little guys are until they start whipping that trunk around. he was standing right next to mom and i was a little worried about mom freaking out on me for being close to the baby etc etc but she seemed quite indifferent to the whole matter. i digress because none of this is what made the last few days eventful....on the way back from the zoo i was driving the rental car...the wheel on the right side and driving on the left side of the road etc etc. no problems, ive driven all over asia so i wasnt particularly worried. the problem arose because in thailand, the myriad of cross country buses load and unload all over the place, not just at bus terminals. when they do this, they will park the bus taking up the entire left hand lane and causing quite the traffic fuck up. well entering bangkok i was in the middle of three lanes and all of the sudden the car in front of me swerved and i was face to face with the ass end of a city bus that was parked half in the first lane and half in the second lane.....pretty much taking up two lanes....well the split second i had to realize this was not enough although it was soooooo close but alas i completely obliterated the left front quarter panel of this car. no one was hurt, it was minor really but screwed the car pretty good. luckily it was insured but we lost our $200 deposit on it so that really sucked. got introduced to the thai version of traffic laws which like everything else is totally corrupt. in the short version.....the rental company had given us a number to call if we got in an accident....we called...a guy showed up, took the keys and told the police he was the driver but the bus was wayyy too far out into the road.....which was evident with all the crumpled car parts. since the driver was thai and not a westerner the police were much more likely to believe him and not arrest me. the cop left, the rent-a-driver yelled at the bus driver for a few minutes and then gave us the keys to the car that he had just pulled up in and told us to return it to the rental company while he waited for the tow truck for our original car. my advice to anyone experiencing traffic problems, make sure your company provides you a pay for patsy and have a thai girlfriend who can yell and scream loud enough to make the bus driver walk away in despair...... problem solved.
you may notice that i have installed a counter on the bottom of this page. i have no idea who is reading this since only my trusty father writes me anymore but with the counter, i can at least have a rough idea of how many people are reading this lol. well, all good things come to an end and thus this leg of my journey ends. it is time to recharge the wallet and brave the cold of alaska in hopes of living another stretch of travels as interesting as this one has been. ill keep writing on the blog but maybe not as often (kinda kills my whole counter thing huh?). and probably a little more introverted like the post about the prison dreams....but stick with me kid cuz im goin places.
