so this is the second posting today, make sure you scroll down after reading this one so u can read the nicer of the two......well i finally left off from darjeeling, having postponed it a few times for various reasons. i could have just bought a package and that is what i usually do when traveling but due to the maoist insurgency there was a night travel curfew, meaning that the package deal bus would stop in the middle of the nowhere for the night and then continue on in themorning. instead i decided to piece together the thing myself so i bought my ticket for a shared jeep down to siliguri. these are designed to seat 8 people but it being india we had 14....including 2 on the roof. somehow in india they seem to ruin everything. i have not had one PURELY good experience in that country. its always well it was nice BUT..........

upon arriving at siliguri i jumped on a rickshaw to the bus station but before we got there the rickshaw guy put me on a bus that was stopped at a stop light assuring me it was going to the nepali border. thankfully he wasnt lying but he put me on the local bus which means we are makng stops everywhere. it still was only about an hour and a half though to the border. now jump on another rickshaw, go through passport control....go across the bridge, get my visa and stamp and then....pause.
its now about 4pm and the "day" bus leaves at 4am. so now i get a crappy hotel room on the border and since its some festival NO restaurants are open. i shall starve away the night and then wake up at the butt crack of dawn for what was to be a 14 hour drive to kathmandu. well of course the bus leaves an hour late for no other reason then the people who will be riding it cant be bothered to actually stop talking to one another and geton the bus. we pull away after an hour wait and i shit you not, we stopped 2 blocks away to pick up morepeople. this will be the pattern for the next 3 hours. add to that various military check pointswhere the bus is turned off anda guy with an automatic rifle gets on board and you have the makngs of a great journey. all in all it lasted about 18 hours of cramped crappy conditions. my ass still hasnt recovered. luckily kathmandu seems really cool so far though i havent ventured far. i need a full day to recover after that trip
