having survived the jungle i went in search of something a little less exhausting and i found it at the perinthion islands which are in northern malaysia. it took a bit of work to get there mostly because the malaysian travel system is NOT set up for backpackers but finally i landed on the beach and was told i could set up my tent anywhere i wanted for a lil under $1 a day. The islands are very very small and to be honest there is not to much to do there other then snorkel and sit on the beach. the snorkeling is great with amazing water clarity and a load of turtles. this is where a lot of them come to lay their eggs every year and the season had just started so every once in awhile u would see a monstrous turtle swimming around in the water close to you. the black tipped reef sharks were the same as in thailand but a lot smaller........smaller but more numerous. i guess its a fair tradeoff.

also on this island they have HUGE monitor lizards which are a slightly smaller cousin to the komodo dragon. I have never seen lizards this big in my life and they just kind of walk around and through the bungalow areas. they are beautiful and amazing but they eat turtle eggs and the turtles are having a bit of a tough go at the moment. so one night the staff awakened us because a turtle had come up on shore to lay eggs on a nearby beach. we trekked through the forest at night (dark) and came out onto a deserted beach and watched as she laid about 80 eggs. they have a sort of conservation program just to keep the eggs away from the monitors and that is to just move the eggs to their beach where they can keep an eye on them. so as we dig up the hole to get to the eggs u can hear the monitors in the jungle thrashing about and getting thoroughly pissed off that we are taking their dinner. strange adventures my friends.......strange indeed.
