I had a complete and enjoyable experience in krabi and although it was on the coast that got "hit" by the tsunami, there was little to no sign of damage. taking this as a sign that things had recovered i packed my bag and bought a ticket to phi phi island which is the crown jewel of the snorkel/diving world as far as thailand is concerned. I was soon to learn that phi phi does not exist anymore. oh sure the land mass is still there and so are most of the palm trees. but what once existed of the town and local infrastructure is completely gone and is going to take a while to come back. the biggest shock was that there was no one there helping. there was no government organization, there was no red cross or U.N. the only people helping were the westerners who came to volunteer. i was one of the people who didnt plan on volunteering but once you get there its really a question of how can you not? one side of the island is pretty ravaged but the other side is just gone and there are shells of buildings and heaps of debris everywhere. at the volunteer station (run by westerners) there is a sign saying to mark off any body parts you may find and report them to the authorities. the word SOBERING does not even come close to describing the experience. there are scuba volunteers cleaning up the bays, there are a group of animal rights people here taking all the strays to bangkok....supplies trickle in on the daily ferries but the place is a disaster zone. the scary thing is everyone i talk to says that last week it was so much worse......that you can see the progress. amazing........we all bitch about our country at the moment due to the political climate and im sure we all bitch about taxes and the such.........just thank god that u have what u have. I love u all...........talk to you soon
