i guess about a year ago, right before i got here, bangkok had outlawed elephants in the city due to traffic congestion. quite the problem indeed. when you consider that you have a massive amount of cabs, tuk tuks, motor bikes, mopeds, trucks and motorized food stands (its better not to ask) traversing a winding and intersecting series of highways, roads and alleyways that seemingly was designed by an austistic child with a bad crack problem you can only imagine the problems ELEPHANTS can cause in a major city. I had no idea that these animals were carousing the cities led by their handlers (mahouts) in hopes of making money and being fed. i saw my first urban elephant in pattaya and while they are still amazing and magnificant creatures, the fact that they are being led around these streets and soi's (glorified alley's) was really kind of sad. I was happy to see that the city officials held an urban elephant round up last week and that there are no more urban elephants allowed in less city. hopefully their handlers run out of places to take them and will dump them in an elephant sanctuary...there are quite a number of them since the elephant is like the national symbol more then anything else. hell, they used to go to war with 30,000-40,000 of them! now thats amazing.

i think the only thing more disturbing then the elephants was drinking a beer at 4am at an establishment and having girls who were about 7-8 trying to sell me gum or roses to give to hookers. that kind of threw my mind for a loop, i mean what the hell were they doing there at 3-4 in the morning? of course those of you with the probing minds and the smart asses would probably ask what was I DOING there at 4am.......well someone has to win souls for jesus!!!!
