I only have one thing to say.  The road between Carlsbad Cavern and El Paso (US 62/180) is the most desolate drive I ever had to make.  I did not run across a single town, gas station and very few cars during the ride.  It made it difficult to keep my eyes open during the 150 mile drive.  I think I had my eyes open during the drive...maybe that is why I missed the signs habitation.
