Although there is an Las Cruces International Airport, the only flights going to or coming from the airport were flights to/from Albuquerque...not very international unless there are a lot of unannounced flights from Mexico.  To get to Las Cruces from DC, the best way is to fly to El Paso, rent a car and drive the 47 miles.

My trip was uneventful but the same could not be said about a co-worker, Deb.  I ran into Deb at the airport gate at Washington National.  Deb originally booked the flight out of Dulles but in some confusion thought she was leaving from National.  Since it was nearly impossible to traverse DC rush hour traffic in time to make the Dulles flight, she rebooked to this flight at a steep penalty >$800.  I do not envy Deb when she has to explain this to her manager.  We had a connection out of Atlanta before finally landing in El Paso.

We both booked separate cars from Avis but the parking spot noted on both of our contracts was D15.  Deb's car was actually parked in D22.  Deb also rented a Garmin with the car but was not able to find the hotel address on the Garmin.  Because it was a straight drive on Interstate 10 West from El Paso to Las Cruces, I told Deb to follow me.  All I really needed to know was how to get to I10 from the airport, which the agent at the Avis counter provided, and how to get to the hotel at Las Cruces, which I called the hotel directly for that information.  Half way to Las Cruces, Deb calls me on the cell to pull over because the hood of her car was shaking...apparently the good workers at Avis forgot to close the hood during the vehicle checkout.

Arriving at the hotel, all I had to worry about was deciding what time to request the wake up call.  Deb still has to arrange for the return trip since the original ticket will get her to Dulles but she parked her car at National.
