After the morning round, I wanted to do some sightseeing. I asked guest services for suggestions on places to visit in the area. I was not thrilled with the option of a pottery museum or horticulture garden, so I decided to walk down to Pinehurst Village. I do not think there are any residents in the Village. Everything looks to be either a restaurant, inn or a boutique. There was a Tufts museum but unfortunately it was closed on Saturdays. I spotted a little shop dealing in golf art and antiques, so I decided to spend some time browsing. They had a collection of hickory clubs and standard gallery of golf photos with a slight emphasis on Pinehurst and the two US Opens held here...naturally.
The owner was greeting incoming customers with the advertisement that ASGA members got 10% on any purchase. I saw Pat, cart partner from yesterday, and we talked for a little while. Another ASGA member requested a hug as she spotted my Steelers shirt and conveyed that she was originally from Western Pa but now currently lives in Florida. I spent a great deal of my time talking to the owner about various things related to golf. I told him about my attendance at the Sunday round of the 2005 US Open and how I was there to see Michael Campbell's sand save on the #15 hole. I noticed he was selling these Payne Stewart pins, which were given out for free during the final round, for $25. He wanted to know if I was willing to sell my pin...I was not selling. I felt bad talking with him and not getting anything, so I purchased a commemorative ball of the 1999 US Open victory by Payne Stewart. I did not ask for the ASGA discount because he probably would not believe I was a member anyway. BTW you can see their catalog of items at www.burchfields.com
I was getting hungry so I stepped into a little pub called Darling House. You can tell I was hitting the lull between the lunch and the dinner crowds because there was hardly anyone there. I had an order of Shepard's pie and a few pints of Black and Tan (Guinness and Bass). I also had some terrific sweet potato fries with the meal. I noticed on the bar shelf an unique looking pint glass with the Bass logo sitting on a triangular base. First I asked whether I could purchase two glasses because I collect pint glasses. When the manager said no, I asked the bartender for a pint of Bass in one of those pint glasses. Magically somehow that glass made its way into my bag. As I was leaving the bartender gave me this knowing look. I am sure she did not care and to guarantee this I included the cost of the glass in her tip.
While walking the village, I ran into some fellow people from western Pennsylvania. They were wearing Steelers gear and we exchanged greetings and a few words. Our main topic of discussion was the Penguins and what they need to do to win tonight. It is amazing no matter where I travel...I will run into Steeler fans.
