First Night on the Road
Trip Start May 15, 2010

Monday was a leisure morning. Cloudless sky and sunny. My sisters will attest to our family song, "This is the day, this is the day, that the Lord has made. . . What a day!! Finally had access to WIFI and was able to upload some pictures and update the blog. Yesterday we saw only about 7 GAH “Great Alaskan Holiday" units on the road. More later.
Wall, SD is only famous for “Wall Drugs” and a morning visit confirmed it's claim to fame. The store has 4 entrances, and can seat 500 for all kinds of meals, we’re not sure where, but won’t doubt them. I was able to partake of a fabulous donut which everyone will attest is my specialty. Never a donut I didn’t like. 2 other GAH fellow travelers were at the same campground. It has been fun to re-acquaint ourselves with those we met at the airport
After a gas fillup, off to the Badlands loop. Very picturesque and pictures will show that. Unfortunately each one looks so special when you take it and when you get home they all look the same. Then headed west to toward Rapid City, SD heading toward Mt. Rushmore. This was truly a highlight. Pictures don’t do it justice. They started carving this masterpiece in 1937 – 1943. I think that they all should have carved tears on those Presidents faces, as they would be very sad to see where our country has gone wrong. One of those carvers, Nick Clifford, was signing a book about Mt. Rushmore in the store and his picture shows that. The GAH units at this site where over 10. Probably saw 30 plus today on the road today.
Making our way through the Black Hills we arrived at Crazy Horse Monument. Not really a place we will stop again. The carving they are doing is however unbelievable. After a $ 20.00 fee that we could have used elsewhere, on to Custer, SD heading toward our next RV campground. This started an adventure on a road I won’t drive again. Not really two lanes wide, hoping no one coming the other way. We passed a few cars but no motor homes. Gail, sort of like St. John roads or the road to Glen Livet Distillery!! Ritchie was leaning to the left and not looking. We did see 2 buffalo and several deer in the fields. The topography has changed for sure in this area. More pine tree and hills. A lot like upstate New York or the Smokey Mt.’s. Arrived at Spokane Creek RV Park and set up home for the night. We had the place to ourselves as the pictures will show. Great dinner and sitting in the sunshine for a great end to a great day. We have moved two time zones and I hope this is the night that I sleep and don’t wake up at 4 AM.
