Next we headed for Seville, back across the Spanish border. Seville is charming, definitely one of my favourite places. By the time we got there it was quite late, even by Spanish standards. First we got lost in a series of tiny one-way streets in the car, and then again on foot in the cobbled alley ways. We had a map, but it was more fun to just wander and take everything in, then figure out where we were later. For the first time on our holiday we struck a bit of trouble getting a hotel room, as there was apparently some sort of show on, so a lot of tourists had come to visit the city for the weekend.
We ended up staying in a hostal (not a hostel, but a dodgy hotel) which left a bit to be desired, just because we couldnt be bothered looking anymore. It was okay though, and with the money we saved, we treated ourselves to dinner at an Iberian restaurant, which was great nice cuts of steak Spanish style accompanied by salad and sangria. When we returned to the hostal we met an Aussie called Matt, who turned out to be from Coffs Harbour, and his Canadian girlfriend France, who has been working in Edinburgh. We had a good chat to them for a while, as they had just travelled from Tangiers and narrowly escaped having to bribe officials to get out of the country. Unfortunately we didnt hear the whole story that night, as the grumpy old bugger that owned the place told us all to go to bed.
The next day Nath and I visited the Real Alcazar palace, an amazing network of palace buildings and gardens that have been added to over the centuries by different generations of royalty. The results are incredible there are all styles of buildings lavishly decorated inside and out. Later we headed across the huge cobbled square to the Cathedral, where Christopher Columbuss tomb rests. After having a good gander at that we headed up the walkways inside one of the huge stone towers to get a wonderful view of the whole city. As we were heading for the car we ran into Matt again, who was heading to Granada, minus France, who was heading back to the UK. We were heading for Granada too so we gave him a lift, and on the way heard stories about him working on rooftops in Florida, being surrounded by a pack of wild dogs in the Guatemalan rainforest, and being robbed for his watch in some other South American country. Hed been travelling for eight months and had done so much for someone who is only 19.
