I know a lot of my online friends might not know much about what's happening, other than the fact that I'm going to Europe for a couple months, so here's a summary: My mother died last year, and left each of her children some money. I've been living off of that for the past 10 months while dealing with the loss, taking a few trips to visit friends, and trying to decide what I want to do with my life. I've reached the point where I need to decide on a career I want and try my hardest to get it, and I plan to have made the decision by the beginning of next year. I'm hoping a trip overseas will not only be a fun vacation, but will give me a bit of perspective and help with my decision. I never anticipated going on this trip, but when my sister Glennica invited me, I couldn't refuse... it's been a dream of both of ours for years to take a trip to Europe together, but we never had the time or the money for it until now.
This will be my first truly new experience in a long time... I've taken a few trips to visit friends around the country over the years, but it's always familiar territory, places I've been at least 2 or 3 times before. I've never been in a place where they don't speak my language, or even where the customs are very different... although I've been all over the western half of the United States, my experience in other countries is limited to a quick trip to Winnipeg, and the only thing different there was the colorful money with hockey players on it and the abundance of poutine. Even so, it felt like an adventure, and I anticipate this being a life-changing experience.
As for the trip itself, the plan is to leave September 3rd and fly to Georgia, where we'll be attending DragonCon. My other sister, Sierra, will be with us for the con but not the rest of the trip- it's thanks to her taking over Glennica's job for a couple months that this trip is even possible. After the con, we'll be flying to New York City and staying with Glennica's friend Mike for a few days before taking another flight to Scotland. From there, the plan is pretty flexible... aside from a few specific places we want to go, we're free to do whatever we like on a day-to-day basis, and I'm thinking we'll figure it out through a combination of online research and asking the locals what they recommend. And if any of you have some ideas, I'd love to hear them- just send me an email or leave a comment if you think of somewhere awesome we should visit. :)
We're planning on doing a combination of hostels and couchsurfing for lodging, and we're not entirely sure about transportation yet. After Scotland, we'll be going south through England, across to France, and then east through Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark, where we'll be flying home from Copenhagen. We should be returning on October 27th, just in time for Halloween!
