Hello from Hong Kong or as it's now known, Tim Tam Tommy Town.
Yes, Tom has moved from London to Hong Kong and as such was it made for a very good excuse for us to change our plans a little. We were due to spend another month in India but were a little weary after two months so decided to head to HK for Christmas and New Years Eve.
Throw in the added bonus of Kat's friend Sarah, my old boss Giles and a couple of old colleagues and we were set for a few big nights on the town.
Hong Kong has all the big city specials like smog, odour, 7 million elbows and an insane love of horrible ring tones. At the same time however it's also efficient, hushed and peaceful: the transport network is excellent, the shopping centres are bigger than big (shopping is the national past time after-all), the cuisine is legendary, and the temples and quiet corners of parks are spot on.
From the vantage point of Victoria Peak, overlooking one of the world's busiest ports, you can see a city geared not only to making money but feeling good about it. At night, it's like looking down into a volcano. The view is breathtaking.
So, we had a wonderful Christmas day even though we arrived late in the day from Mumbai and the good times just seemed to get better. We pretty much ate our way in and around Hong Kong, we ate Dim Sum till it came out our ears, we slurped dumpling noodle soup till our eyes watered and had a fantastic roast dinner at Gile's place with his lovely family.
Tom took me out on a boys night where I was able to catchup with an old colleague and friend, Mr Kevin Tsoi. Sadly my performance was lacklustre at best. All these months traveling has turned me from a drinking machine to nothing more than a rank amateur, 3 beers and I was history.
Hong Kong has been an amazing stop for us. If we said we're not a little weary at this point we'd be lying. The last few months through some of the world's poorest countries have taken their toll but the snap decision to come to Hong Kong was worth every extra cent we had to spend. Tom was the host with the most and we quite simply didn't want to leave, however we now feel rejuvenated and ready for the final two months through China and SE Asia. Kat was able to spend some quality catchup time with Sarah from Dior and I was also able to touch base with some peers. Oh, Tom and I also spent some quality time on the XBox 360 where I again showed my technological prowess in humbling him.
Tom, Sarah, Giles, Kev and everyone else we caught up with we offer a solid thanks. In particular Tommy Ma for looking after us so well, you truly are a great mate and we love you long time.
