Madurai is one of the oldest cities of India, with a history dating all the way back to the pre Christian era. The entire city of Madurai, is built around the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. It is believed to have taken over a hundred years to complete the temple. The temple itself is a celebration of art and it is believed that over 30 million pieces of sculpture and stucco images adorn the 14 acre temple complex.
You can simply lose yourself within the temple complex as there are thousands of pilgrims on a daily basis cascading through the warren like passageways. Throw in some blessing elephants a cow or two and you could wander around for hours on end being constantly distracted by something other than the fact that you should be leaving soon.
Apart from the temple complex there isn't much else to see in Madurai. The guide book goes on about some other things not worth mentioning so we won't.
Next Pod - Kanyakumari, India.
Nath and Kat.
