Hello from Jaisalmer, the Golden City.
Golden indeed is Jaisalmer. On approach it's appears to be a giant golden sand castle rising in the middle of a barren desert. The narrow streets of the fort, still inhabited, with elaborate decorated houses, Jain temples, magnificent gateways and a beautiful palace all carved out of the same golden sandstone. It's like something out of a dream.
We spent 5 days in Jaisalmer wandering around and exploring the fort and all it's nooks and crannies. We stayed in a beautiful old havelis (wealthy merchant's home) inside the fort that was converted into a boutique hotel. Our room was easily the best we've had in some time (a tough call after our room in Jodhpur)and really added to the time we had in Jaisalmer.
I won't go on about it other than to say that it's a great little place to spend a few days. The people are very relaxed and hassle free which in turn enables you to relax as well.
And that wraps up Rajasthan for us. We've missed out on a couple of places (Udaipur, Pushkar) but we have bigger fish to fry elsewhere.
Next Pod - Varanasi, India.
Love,
Nath and Kat.
