Greetings all from the 'Rum'..

After our nice and relaxing time by the sea (and not actually swimming in it) what better place to spend a couple of days than the desert?! Hmmm.. I wonder..

So, Wadi Rum is known to most as the place where (TE) Lawrence of Arabia ran riot during the Arab revolt in 1917. Fortunately the place has a little more to offer than simply being home to that snotty nosed Brit who by all accounts enjoyed a good buggering.

Given we weren't pushed for time we were able to enjoy a few days of exploring the desert by day and star gazing by night. We're so gay..

The region known as Wadi Rum is actually a series of valleys about 2 KM's wide stretching north to south for a 100 or so KM's. With this in mind we hired a jeep and guide for a day and explored the region for 8 hours or so. We went up, down and around valleys. We went over the red desert into the white desert, over towards the Saudi Arabia border and back again. We broke down and were rescued by desert goat shepherds that drive late model Toyota Landcruisers (the new ship of the desert).

All in all a truly enjoyable experience, the scenery was just amazing and our photos can only touch on the beauty. Anyone who has experienced the Australian Outback will have some idea of how beautiful Wadi Rum is.

The town of Rum was purpose built by the Jordanian government for the local Bedouin tribes (nomadic desert dwellers for you uneducated swine) and its these folk that most of your dealings are with on a daily basis. They are all related which makes for some scary sights wandering the streets but all in all they're a lovely community who can't do enough for you and you truly feel like one of the family (which is good as we're missing our own) whenever you hangout with them.

Wadi Rum certainly is a must see when in Jordan (see I told you the Jordan pods would get better).

And I guess that wraps it up.

Next pod, Petra - Jordan.
