We weren't disappointed, where Bran has become nothing more than a tourist trap, Sighisoara remains a relatively untouched slice of Romanian medieval history with next to no tourists.
True, we were here to visit the town for Vled reasons but were pleasantly surprised at how nice this place was aside from the Vled connection. The place abounds in cobbled streets full of well preserved buildings some now over 600 years old. Add in a bunch of churches (yawn) and the fact we had a yummy quiche and green salad for lunch, the day was a winner from early on
The clock tower we have a shot of was built in the 1500's and is now a half decent history museum and astoundingly the clock still works. The shots we've taken of the cityscape are from the top of that tower. The views around the region and of the town itself are impressive.
Anyway, Vled was indeed born in Sighisoara and you can even enter the house he was born, the catch being it is now a crappy restaurant serving less than impressive food. We skipped it and simply took the mandatory photo out front much to the restaurant managers disgust. Pfffffff to him I say.
Sighisoara is certainly worth a visit if not a couple of days for soaking it all up. The old town is full of atmosphere and would no doubt be pretty spooky late at night when everyone's gone home. I'd certainly enjoy that (Kat's a big NO) but maybe next time.
Anyway, that about wraps up our time in Romania. Sorry they were brief pods but there wasn't a great deal to write about.
On another note our time in Eastern Europe is almost up. We decided in the end to skip Bulgaria as no-one had anything good to say about the place and we were itching to get to Turkey to begin the next leg of the trip. It was fortunate that we did decide so but I'll go into that next.
Next pod, On a train - Somewhere in Bulgaria.
Nath and Kat.
