So, we're here. Vled Tepes' alleged castle. I started in the previous entry to tell a little bit of Vled's rise to notoriety. Briefly, by all accounts he was a patriotic if not despotic Romanian ruler through the 15th century famed for defeating the Turks on several occasions.

Getting to the point however, more than anything else, Vlad Tepes is known for his exceeding cruelty. Impalement was Tepes's preferred method of torture and execution, which he had learned in his youth as a prisoner of the Turks. His method of torture - a horse attached to each of the victim's legs as a sharpened stake was gradually forced into the body. The end of the stake was usually oiled and care was taken that the stake not be too sharp, else the victim might die too rapidly from shock. Normally the stake was inserted into the body through the anus (helloooo) and was often forced through the body until it emerged from the mouth. Infants were sometimes impaled on the stake forced through their mother's chests.

As I guess you'd expect, death by impalement was slow and painful. Victims sometimes endured for hours or days and then the corpses were often left decaying for months. Gruesome.

So it's to this chaps castle we have come to see what it's all about. The castle is nice enough in fact it's all a bit too homely for my liking. You sort of get shuffled into the first room and then follow a roped off path up, down and around the castle. I continually tried to get off the beaten track so I could locate Dracula's crypt and say 'g'day mate' but all to no avail, this place was setup with some serious electronic countermeasures that would make the CIA proud. Seems Drac's joined the wired age. Damn him..

Essentially the whole experience is a big tourist trap, outside the castle there's stall after stall selling anything loosely related to dracula or horror movies as a whole. There's even a disco setup similar to a ghost train. Tackville to the maximum.

All in all it's one of those places it's nice to say you've visited or to 'tick' off the list but if you're considering doing it yourself, only do it if you're really really interested in the legend of Dracula. Otherwise I feel you'll be very disapointed.

Next pod, Sighisoara - Romania.
