Vilnius Vilnius, well another day and another Baltic Country's capital. And it's another pearler. Without wanting to sound like a broken record, what are the good folk of these three Baltic countries doing right ? It's another city that's the perfect blend of the old and the new. It's also a staunchly roman catholic city so there's about 4 billion catholic churches scattered about the place. Yawn..
Kat and I were staying in the arty farty area of the old town called Uzupis. In fact the lefty arty types declared Uzupis a republic with its own flag, president, constitution, and even an army of 12 men. They celebrate this half-serious independence annually as Uzupis Day on (you guessed it) April Fool's Day! That day Uzupis has its own currency, customs, elections, and carnivals
We were staying at relatively nice hostel where the highlight had to be the shower in our room. Not in a bathroom or even behind a curtain, just a shower in the corner of the room. I loved it, I was able put on a soap sud show (not to mention my Motley Crue covers)for Kat everyday and she lapped it up. We also met another long term honeymooning couple who sound like they're going to be going for 12-24 months, now that's a honeymoon. Hi to Tim and Sam by the way and see you in Pakistan.
So we spent the best part of 2 days wandering around the city including one day that was possibly the wettest we'd encountered yet. There's some nice sights to see in Vilnius - Cathederal Square (complete with a Greek temple looking catholic church), Gedimas Castle, Gates of Dawn (sounds like a Schwazenegger movie), St Annes church (yep, catholic again) and a bunch of other stuff. Again, just a great town to wander about in.
The highlights for me however had to be the former KGB headquarters where you could wander through the old interrogation cells etc and also the memorial outside of the parliament building to the 13 men, women and children who gave up their lives in the struggle for independence in '91
All in all, a great stop and the end of the Baltic Country portion of the honeymoon. Final tally - Baltic Countries 3, Russia 0. See how Russia fares against the former Soviet Bloc countries in further episodes.
Next pod, Warsaw - Poland.
Nath and Kat.
