Well that's what it said in the Lonely Planet. Our point of view.. Not quite Mr Lonely Planet.
It was nice but I guess we were expecting some nice snowy mountain scenery, with picturesque villages and some cute cows with bells around their necks.
Essentially we were dropped off on the freeway and had to firstly walk 5 kms to the small town of Sigulda which was just that, a small town. From there it was a 15 km hike to Turaida Castle mainly by road. There was a nice church along the way and a ruined castle at the top of the hill but nothing spectacular. Do we have church and castle fatigue ?
There was also a cave along the way which again was nothing really but I guess when you're trying to draw people to your local area you may as well hype up everything
Next stop on the hike was Turaida Castle which was charging something stupid to get in so we decided to sneak into the grounds via the woods that run along the road. Kat wasn't too sure about about sneaking in but I managed to convince her that there was no way we'd get caught. Guess what, the old lady from the gate must've changed shift and just as we were emerging from the woods looking really guilty, there she was. A chase ensued, Kat and I doubled over in hysterics and a 50 year old lady shouting at us for money. We raced as fast as we could to the castle proper and took a couple of photos and then hightailed it back through the woods with the old lady on our tail. Honeymooners 1, Old Lady 0.
All in all the day trip was nice. The weather was perfect for walking, we had a lovely picnic lunch and most importantly we had a good laugh.
Next pod, Vilnius - Lithuania.
Nath and Kat.
Ps. Vic and Willy, I think Interpol probably has Kat on their list now as well.
