Where I stayed

In one corner of the lake is the Temple complex which also contains the Royal Palace buildings.  The Temple is a place of pilgrimage and there were many people praying at the place where the Tooth was said to be.  The Tooth itself was housed is several places in Sri Lanka and this is its final reasting place. The buildings were built in 1764 and parts of the complex are still used for important events.

About 70kms away from Kandy is Maniyangama where there is a dogoba dating back 2000 years. There was no one there when I arrived so I walked round it a took photos of the wall paintings depicting various scenes which meant nothing to me. I shall have to find a book about Sri Lankan history.

Getting to this place was a real effort. The bus was old and the road full of potholes. I several places there were l landslides and so the width of the road was reduced and we crawled through tiny gaps in the road. Towards the end of the trip were went down to the plains via 17 hairpin bends. Curiously at the right hand bends were groups of monkeys watching us go by. But none onhe left hand bends. Why?

Although it was a long day it was worth the effort.
