I got my permit from the Resident's office but then discovered that its not necessary to get one. They told me the permit procedure goes back to the olden days when there were tribal problems in the area and they needed to know who was going upriver. Having obtained it no one ever asked me for it. So anyone who goes to Kapit should ignore the advice to get one. I saw the Resident at a function some days later and he did not deny that it was not necessary but I suppose it gives his staff something to do. If you come the other way ther is no permit procedure.

The last time I was in Kapit earlier this year I was unable to go further upriver as the water level in r was too low for the boat to negotiate the rapids. this time it was different as there has been a lot of rain so there are no difficulties. The next main town is Belaga and and in between are several small villages and the boat stops whereever someone wants to get off. There are no landing stages so the people have to jump off the front of the boat as it comes in contact with the bank. So you see them jumping off with their bags and children. I wonder what the Health and Safety people would think in the UK!  The main reason for going to Belaga is not just to shoot the rapids but also to find  someone to take me to a longhouse to stay with the poeple.
