The Rejang River is nearly a mile wide and there is a lot of river traffic of various descriptions. there are tugs towing barges containing logs, coal, machinery etc etc as well as express boats to several villages up and down river, so its very busy.  According to the guide there are more millionaires per head of population than any other city in Borneo. I suppose most of the wealth has come from the hardwood trade. However I saw more Ferraris in neighbouring Brunei.

Close to the waterfront is the 100 year old Chinese Temple and the guide book recommended that I visti the caretaker there. Mr Tan has his name in the Lonely Planet and has been given an award by the Tourism Minister for the information he has given to tourists for the last 35 years. He told me about the yin and yen, night and day, good and bad, gold and silver and so on. I have to admit that the information was coming out so fast that I cannot remember much of it. One thing that I do recall is that when people have important decisions to make they come to the temple and throw down the yin yen pieces and if they fall in a positive way then it means good luck. If they fall the other way 3 times, then the signs are not good. come. I watched people burning paper money but can't remember why they did that.

There are 7 levels the Temple and its a good place to get photos of the river and the city. Mr Tan gave me the  key to go upstairs.

The boat terminal is very busy and I took the boat to Kapit which is about 5 hours up river and where I hope to get a permit to go into the interior and visit some tribes and maybe stay with them in their long houses.

FOOTNOTE: I think that its well worth while to visit the Tua Pek Kong Temple and the Goddess of Mercy Pagoda beside it. Mr Tan Tack Chaing is there from 6 am to 12 noon and speaks excellent English.
