So with the clothes that I stood in and a spare shirt I packed my bag, leaving the the rest at the hostel to pick up on my return. I had heard about some forest treks and hoped that I would be able to get a place when I go to Kota Kinabalo.
I arrived at the bus station and was only one of three passengers on the 40 seater. The journey was to last 8 hours at a cost of 14 pounds. North of Miri is Brunei so we would be crossing the border from Malaysia. The first went smoothly then that was followed by exit from Brunei, entry back into Malaysia, then exit Malaysia and another entry into Brunei and a final entry into Malaysia. I had not appreciated before this trip that there were 2 bits to Brunei.
The other passengers got off after a couple of hours and I had the coach to myself for the rest of the way. We passed some interesting scenery. Fairly flat to start with then more hilly. There were large areas where the forest had been cleared and oil palms planted instead which spoilt the landscape but it does provide revenue for the country. We crossed sever rivers and had to take the car ferry to get across tow of them.
The trip took over 10 hours in the and I could not help thinking that if the coach had been full it would have taken ages at customs. All the in and out stamps used up 3 pages in the passport and I shall have to think about taking the bus for the return trip. Flying is more expensive but it only takes an hour.
