I am now in a very dry part of the country. Arequipa is situated in an that has natural springs and surrounded by extinct volcanoes- It is called the white city I think because they used the volcanic rock to make the buildings. Its about 2000m above sea level so it gets quite cold at night.
The room that I have is on the roof of the building and in the morning the sun shines in through the window and I have an uninterrupted view of the mountains and volcano. The other day the room shook and I thought that it was the traffic but it was too early for that and then realised the reason. They say its a long time that had a goo earth quake here and its about time. I hope that there is a delay until I move on.
The streets are quite narrow and I have found that the people do not take too much notice of you.Previously I had made contact with someone at the university and I was pleased to meet him at the campus. He is the head of Computer Science and was very well travelled abroad. We had an interesting conversation about the country and the economic situation. I discovered that there is some tension between certain sections of the community in Peru which is not obvious to me before.
I am enjoying Arequipa and have seen some of the city from the top of the open top bus. I have indulged myself and bought a really fine alpaca scarf. Soon it will be time to move on.
Footnote. I stayed at La Posada del Virrey which is very central, its just off Via Jerusalen and not far from the main square. I was in a single room with private toilet and paid 35 sol a night widh included breakfast on the roof. Maria the owner can sell you tickets fro any tours that you want.
