To get back to Quito it is necessary to cross the mountains. Leaving the hot coast was welcome the road was good to start with then deteriorated to potholes and under construction. In a few years once the work is finished Ecuador will have a good network. For now the road wound its way up steep valleys for several thousand feet leaving the rivers far below. Now and again we passed waterfalls. Then we went through the clouds and before long it began to rain. The long line of buses and trucks went on in diminishing light and heavier rain. It was a relief to reach the top and beging the descent, However the area was lush green forest and we went past small settlements. Once the rain stopped the sun came out and we descended into Quito. It was food to get out of the bus after 10 hours of going over potholes.
