Have seen plenty of great scenery in the past few days. Took a bus from Oxford to Manchester via Birmingham and was picked up by Liz Hennel and Mike Brooks. Spent three nights with them just outside of Rochdale - we ate well - Liz's homemade jams, scones, pates; all washed down with plenty of cups of tea. Wandered Rochdale a bit on my own and stopped in at the Museum of the Cooperative Movement. Took walks with their two border terriers in the surrounding farmland and visited local Farm Shops for coffee and pastries. Attempted to find out about my old pen pal from Oldham who I lost touch with in '89. Our mothers were pen pals at the end of WWII, but with no luck.
Today they drove me to the Lake District, since I mentioned I was never there before. Beautiful area - home of Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter (while she was writing). Took a little ferry across Lake Windermere, walked thru the Grizedale Forest and had lunch in a charming, tho touristy town called Hawkshead. We then made it into North Yorkshire and they delivered me to the town of High Bentham where I am now staying with Barb Vigour and Michael Singleton. It is a nice little walkable town and they live at No 1 Cherry Orchard Cottage which is as nice as the name sounds. Have seen no billbords or plastic or neon or McDonalds (or Starbucks) the whole day - heavenly. We drove to the nearby Forest of Bowland where we watched the sun go down- at 10 pm - over 300 sq miles of wild, treeless, moors with horses and sheep running free. Pictures will have to come later. Heading to Sheffield tomorrow to see Ruth Thomas.
