Since the last time I updated this blog there has been a few interesting things that have happened.  First I did have a chance to work at a University in Talca but they only have jobs opened for next semester and that would be in January and I need a job quick fast and in a hurry.  I really want to work in Asia so I can save money and then return to Chile later; unfortunately I will have to leave the country soon and go back to the good old USA.

Next after a little work I traveled with the Debate Team to Linares (Last week August 13th) for the competition and they CHOKED!!!  All those people looking at them was TOO MUCH.  Everything they remembered went OUT THE WINDOW and they READ their entire speeches, and never looking up.  NOT ONCE!!  I had warned them this would happen but they did not believe me because they are used to talking infront of their classmates all the time.  I told them just because they are the best steakers in their class means nothing. They would be competing against other kids that are the best in their class and they have more practice.  When they saw all the students in the auditorium the butterflies started to build and the closer they got to speaking the more nervous they got.  Poor Sergio was so frazzled that he must have used the bathroom about 5 times.  The subject was:  Should Bullies Be Penalized - FOR or AGAINST.  We had to prepare 2 speaches (one For and the other Against)  We pulled our topic out of a Hat we were going to debate FOR PENALIZING BULLYING.  They were so happy because the students were more familiar with the FOR argument.  3 students would present arguments and then one would give the summary (4 students in total).

The rest of our Debate Team, Pilar and I sat an watched as the first 3 slowly CAME UNDONE!!  It was like watching a train wreck.  You know you should look away but you can't and you are paralyed even though you want to help.  There was a 10 break so they could prepare for the summary.  Pilar and I went to the stage to help scoop up what was left of their pride.  The were smaller than they were 2 hours prior.  They looked so young with Doe like eyes looking up at me as if begging for a lifeline.  I had no lifeline to give.  They would have to see this out until the end.  I did tell them " Don't worry it is not the end of the world.  You did not die, you will live to see another day.  I see how nervous you are but you could have run off stage but you didn't you stayed and finished and that is MUY VALIENTE(Very Brave) y estoy muy orgulloso de usted (and I am very proud of you)."  That lifted their spirits a little because I think they thought I was mad at them but I could never be mad as someone that was TRYING something new. Then I said, "How nervous would I be if I were saying a speach in SPANISH.  They started Laughing.  A LITTLE TOO MUCH IF YOU ASK ME!  Here I am thinkin my spanish was getting better.  But reality checks are for everyone.  I did not mind being the butt of the joke as long as it lifted their spirits.  On Thursday August 20th we will return (to the scene of the crime) to Linares for the second half of the competition.  I am sure they will do better.  They couldn't possibly do any worse.

All good things must come to an end.  I don't know where that phrase came from but it is certainly true of my time here in Chile.  I have met some outstanding people and have visited some amazing places.  There is no doubt that I will return to this place.  I have made friends and inherited a new family, so I know I will return.  Plus I have to see what else South America has to offer.  I have to visit Isla De Pasqua (Easter Island) I want to see the Rapa Nui do their traditional dance.  I would love to see Machu Pichu in Peru and of course I have to visit a beach in Brazil at least once in my lifetime.  That means I can't come back to South America until I have a BEACH BODY because they are flawless in Brazil.  I also want to see the Rain Forest so if I don't have the beach body I can skip the beach and hang out with the monkeys!!  Last but not least Venezuela, I hear it is beautiful.  Until then I have a few more days here and I will enjoy every minute of it.

I hope you are doing well today.  Today is cold, rainy and the clouds are hidding the mountains, but tomorrow they have promised sun and warmer weather.  So remember my friends to all of us a little rain must fall.   With Days so cloudy don't remember the sun.  But the sun is always there even when you can't see it.  So live everyday as if it is a sunny day, because it actually is.
