Where I stayed
Hotel Don Luis
It begins to rain and I watch hundreds of rain drops dance on my window
Fourteen hours later we arrive and find the hotel (Hotel Don Luis) where I will be staying. It is very modern and best of all it has central heating and the ice and cold of the north melts away like a dream. The next day was sunny and clear, and Eliana, Karen, Lisa, Fransisco (the other teachers that will be teaching with me in Puerto Montt) and I decide to explore the city. We walk toward the little town of Angelmo. I street was lined with Merchants selling everything from jewelry, and socks. We continue to walk sandwiched by the traffic crammed street on our right and the ocean on our left.
We are greeted by a lady that asked if we wanted to take a 30 minute boat ride around the island. For only $2,000 pesos ($4 USD) it was worth the time and the money. We set sail in a tiny little raggedy motorboat. The smell of the ocean and the sound of seagulls made it not a mere ride around an island, but a High Sea Adventure
The view from my plank-like seat was breath taking. Our boat cut through the calmness of the ocean like a hot knife through butter. We wave as we pass other boats packed with other tourist who were enjoying a beautiful Sunday at sea. Pelicans and other sea birds dance on the top of the water in flocks relaxing in the sun and drinking in the atmosphere. We are guided to the left, and out guide points out some houses that seem to be standing on Stilts. She says the ocean has been known rise to the highest level of those houses. We asked what the people did when waters got that high, and her reply was, “The move to higher ground and wait for the storm to pass.”
We pass a ship and resting on the plank was a sea lion. We could not believe it, out of all the things we expected to see, a sea lion was not one of them
After we dock and have lunch at the hotel. After lunch we head back into the city because Eliana wanted to bring Raul a gift. Since Eliana was here with me, Raul had the privilege of stay in home alone with Eliana’s mother ALONE! He calls her Monton de Aņo (pronounced: Moan-tone day-On-yo – Means mountain of years). It is always funny to me that he would compare her age with a Mountain. We walk, walk, and walk some more. Finally Eliana find the fish market she was looking for. Raul loves seafood and this place has some of the best seafood in Chile.
We walked so much, and now the sun has set, and the street lights are on, to illumination our path. We had a full day and we need to go home and prepare for the upcoming week. We drop Eliana off at the bus station. It was kind of strange leaving her alone. I have seen her every day for the past month and it will miss her. My new companions tell me how nice and sweet she is and wishes their host mom was more like her
I am working at the Instituto Puerto Montt. The best part of working here this week is the students are funny, energetic and eager to learn. Best of all they speak English very well so it is a little easier to teach them. We were supposed to have 60 students but only 20 students showed up on the first day, 4 more showed up on the second day and on the third day we received 8 more. We decided to divide the students into 2 groups. Fransisco and I taught one group and Lisa and Karen taught the other. On the second day our lesson was to teach about physical and personal traits. We made a list of words that would expand the student’s vocabulary. We had several activities to test the student’s comprehension of the vocabulary words. I decided that they should write a paragraph to describe themselves using the vocabulary words. The following are those paragraphs and photos of the students, the vocabulary words are underlined:
