I arrived in Bass Harbor Maine last Wednesday 5/24/06. Bass Harbor is on the same island as Bar Harbor which is surrounded by the Acadia National Park. Thursday was an exciting day. I stayed at the campgrounds and did laundry (yes you really needed to know this).
Friday I went to Bar Harbor and explored the area. I looked into taking a sea kayak tour and then had lunch at a place called Geddy's. After lunch I walked around town and stop in one shop call Cool as a Moose (www.coolasamoose.com). They and some really cool T-shirts and other stuff there. I broke down and bought myself a T-shirt and (if you are reading this in front of my youngest nephews skip the rest of the sentence) I bought my youngest nephews T-shirts for the birthday
Saturday I drove into Acadia National Park and the weather was beautiful. I finally got to put shorts back on instead of wearing jeans. Anyhow, I drove up to the highest point in Acadia called Cadilac Mountian. Another highlight was a place called Thunder Hole. It is a spot on the water where the water rushes in and sprays the area. The higher the tide the higher the spray. The tide was pretty low so it wasn't spraying to high but it was neat to watch and I went back on Sunday and got some better pictures. Another spot is call Bubble Rock, there I got out and climb to the top of the rock and got some good pictures.
Sunday was another beautiful day and I went back into Bar Harbor to take a sea kayak tour. While I was waiting for the tour I had lunch at a nearby restaurant and had fresh lobster for lunch. The lobster was excellent. The sea kayak tour went from 2-4, the first 20-30 minutes were an instruction period as none of the people in the tour had ever kayaked before. I was paired up with a woman that was taking the tour by herself. They had given me the option of taking a single person kayak or pairing up with someone and taking a two person kayak. I was glad I decided to pair up because I knew I was going to get a good workout. We left the harbor and crossed over to an island called Bar Island
Monday I took a drive up into Maine looking for part of the Appalachian Trail. It took me a couple of hours to get to Monson Maine and once I got there I drove right by it. It went to the next town and got directions and headed back to Monson and drove right by it again. Once I finally found the sign and parking area, I took a short hike on the Appalachian Trail. I didn't go very far, but I can now say I have been on the Appalachain Trail. Maybe someday I can get to do some real hiking on the Appalachain Trail, maybe I'll even cover the whole 2100 miles.
Anyhow that has been the highlight of the past week. I'm now heading towards Michigan for a graduation. On the way I plan to make 3 stops. One stop is the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown NY, the next stop will be the Frank Llyod Wright house Falling Water in PA and the Rock and Roll hall of fame in Cleveland. From the to my parents. That will probably be the next time I update everyone on my travels.
