Overall, Solo itself isn't that exciting. I visited the main sights and enjoyed wandering around the smaller sidestreets, enjoying the messiness of the city, as usual. However, I would have missed out if I hadn't signed up for the tour that I did today! I went on a motorbike tour to some temples in the mountains. (I had a guide all to myself, which was pretty cool, because I could decide when to stop and take photos). I enjoyed it not for the temples though, but for the incredible countryside scenery. The photos just can't do justice, and for the most part I didn't bother to take out my camera, and just enjoyed the crazy ride through the hills. The temples were nothing special in themselves, it was all about the location in the misty mountains which was absolutely incredible!!! The top temple was 1600 m above sea level, so we covered quite a bit of distance.
Oh yes, and I forgot to write about the wayang organg performance last night. There was a cultural performance of some sort that is put on every night of the week except for Sunday here. I went on Saturday night, which is probably the most interesting night of the week to go see it, because there was probably a good 300 people there. It was basically a strange mix of dance, theatre, and comedy and signing. I had no idea what was going on, because there were defenitely long dialogues with little action in some parts, but it was worth it just for the costumes, and just to be part of what apparently a lot of people do on a Saturday night in Solo. It cost 3000 Rp (about 40 cents), so it was more than worth it. It was nothing as exciting as the Balinese dancing in Ubud, but cool in an entirely different way. Cool just to see who was there around me, and at what parts everyone laughed.
I had wanted to sign up for a Batik-making course for tomorrow, but my favorite little restaurant (which runs this course) is closed today because it is Sunday so I can't sign up, so I suppose this means I will be off to Yogya tomorrow, where I hope this will also be possible!
