Ulcinj is a very odd city. In the medieval years it was a haven for pirates who would capture passing ships in the Adriatic. They would steal the ships and cargo and ransom off the captives and all those that wouldn't pay up, they would sell into slavery. There still remain the prisoners cells within the fortress and the slave market in the center of town.

With today's tourisms seeking new ways to distinguish itself, its odd that that Ulcinj hasn't marketed its ugly side—its history of piracy and violence. Other places have had huge success at marketing their sordid pasts, like Salem, Massachusetts, the gore tours of London, and the Dracula's castle in Romania, etc. Even the name, Ulcinj, is a PERFECT for creating the ambiance if piracy. Yet everything online about this city is trying to white wash its past and trying to compete with neighboring Budva. They have a fortune at their finger tips and they don’t' even see it. What a shame.

Anyway, this is a great town that is seriously under rated. They have great beaches, incredibly nice locals, a beautiful harbor and an intriguing history. It's too bad their not marketing their city for all its pluses.

This evening we had pirates and winch’s theme party. It was fun.
