Last week I had the opportunity to swim with Manatees in Crystal River Florida. For those of you that are not familiar with Manatees they are large, grey-brown aquatic mammals that reach up to 13ft long and 3000lbs.
The West Indian Manatee has no natural enemies and spends their days eating and sleeping at the bottom of the river. Unfortunately all Manatee Mortalities are human related and we have caused this beautiful creature to become endangered.   Due to loss of habitat, boating accidents, fishing line entanglement, ingestion of litter/fishing hooks/plastic bags, and being crushed in locks there are only 3000 Manatee left in the United States.
Tania and I toured Crystal River with Birds Under Water. This company is dedicated to educating the public and protecting the Manatee from Boats and other manmade hazards. For those travelers that are reading my TP for information, I strongly recommend Bird's Underwater Tours in Crystal River.
