I spent my first 4 days in Tofo relaxing and enjoying the beach. We spent our days picking coconuts, bartering for fresh avocados, body surfing, swimming and swinging in the hammock.

On the 5th day Ester and I decided to go snorkeling for Whale Sharks. When I signed up I really had no idea what a Whale Shark was. But I quickly learned that it was a gentle creature that ranged from 6-12 m in length. I was instantly intrigued.

We departed Tofo beach and headed south for 8 km before starting our search. Within 1 min our guide informed us there was one under the boat and it was safe to jump in. I actually jumped in right on top of the whale and missed its fin by 1 ft. What a rush. I was pretty surprised to see how inquisitive they were. I think they were just as fascinated and curious about us as we were with them. One male shark swam right towards me to check me out. It was freaking huge (10 m ish). I kept telling myself "Melissa, it is the cow of the sea, a gentle creature". But I was still scared to death J After swimming with 2 of them for 20 mins they lost interest and swam off. Just as I was about to get in the boat, I heard a scream. When I turned my head I saw a 10m Whale shark casually swim past me (1 ft). I have to say, it was incredible.
